Boca Raton Symphonia
Young People’s Concerts and
In-School Activities
Generously underwritten by Edith and Martin B. Stein
The Boca Raton Symphonia’s American Landmarks and Landscapes is an integrative educational music program to teach and reinforce basic classroom curricula, which has been specifically developed for 5th grade students. Edith and Martin B. Stein have donated $10,000 to help with the overall development and implementation of this comprehensive educational program. Mr. and Mrs. Stein’s continued commitment to music education of our children is appreciated by The Symphonia, our community and the School District of Palm Beach County.
In addition to reinforcing classroom curricula required by the Florida Sunshine State Standards for education, the Symphonia Young People’s Concerts offers opportunities for teachers and students to understand how music directly relates to other disciplines such as history, social studies of diverse cultures in America, and language arts. The comprehensive program provides pre-concert school visits by orchestral musicians, a Teacher Guide and Student Workbook with pre and post-concert activities, a Symphonia Concert, and follow-up evaluations of the overall program.
The Teacher Guide and Student Workbook contain background information for all learning activities that prepare the students for the concert performance experience with hundreds of fellow 5th grade students. The activities involve students in reading, writing, listening, research, discussions, reflections and the use of technology.
The curriculum materials integrate the Florida Sunshine State Standards in Social Studies, Music, and Literature. Through music, 5th grade students, who study American History, will be able to understand changing geography and dynamic historical events, as well as explore cultural and social impacts of everyday life in Colonial America. The Boca Raton Symphonia 2006-2007 Young People’s Concerts provide 5th grade music and classroom teachers with a unique means of giving their students a rich musical learning experience to address their core curriculum objectives and have lots of fun doing it!
