Ramon Tebar is quickly establishing himself as one of the most exciting Spanish conductors of his generation. He was appointed Florida Grand Opera’s Music Director starting June 1, 2011, becoming the first Spanish conductor to lead a major American opera company. He worked with FGO in the past, conducting highly acclaimed performances of Lucia di Lammermoor in 2009 and Turandot in 2010. The Grand selected him as winner of the 2010 Henry C. Clark Conductor of the Year Award. After his arrival from Spain in 2005, he joined the musical staff of the Palm Beach Opera and Cincinnati Opera, working on 30 opera productions while maintaining a full schedule in Europe.
Among Tebar’s conducting highlights from last season and next are Madama Butterfly, Italiana in Algeri, and La Boheme with Renata Scotto as stage director; a nationally broadcast concert with Spanish Radio Television Orchestra and a return engagement for a gala concert in 2011; Opening Night Gala Concert with Ben Heppner in Santo Domingo’s Music Festival, returning in 2011 to conduct Carmen; an Italian tour performing Puccini’s Messa di Gloria and a very successful new production of the Italian premiere of Iphigenie auf Tauris by Gluck; Final Concert of Montserrat Caballe’s Competition; The Battleship Potemkin by Shostakovich at the Kravis Center; a zarzuela production in Teatro Campoamor in Oviedo; I Puritani with Mariella Devia in Cagliari; Italiana in Algeri at Teatro Regio di Torino; New York performances of La vida Breve and Goyescas; the New Year Gala Concert with Castilla y Leon Symphony Orchestra and concerts with the Navarra Symphony Orchestra; debut in Russia conducting Montserrat Caballe with the St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra; and opera productions with Maggio Musicale in Florence and Theater San Carlos in Naples, Italy.
Tebar has directed orchestras such as the Extremadura Symphony, Cordoba Symphony, Castilla y Leon Symphony, Navarra Symphony, City of Oviedo Symphony, and Spanish Radio Television Orchestra in Spain; St. Petersburg Symphony, Ishjek Opera Orchestra, Lugansk Philharmonic, Pilsen Philharmonic; Orchestra Internazionale d’Italia, Orchestra Sinfonica di Cagliari, Orchestra Sinfonica di Bari, Orchestra Teatro Regio of Turin, and Spoleto Festival Orchestra in Italy; Miami Symphony Orchestra, Naples Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony, and Atlanta Symphony in the United States. He was recently appointed Music Director of the Palm Beach Symphony.
Winner of the Triandi Career Grant, Greek violinist Areta Zhulla has performed as a soloist throughout the United States, Europe, Canada, and Asia at many renowned venues such as Carnegie Hall, Auditorium du Louvre, Alice Tully Hall, Kennedy Center, Metropolitan Museum, and National Arts Centre. She has recently appeared with the Athens State Symphony, Westchester Philharmonic, Kenosha Symphony, Allen Philharmonic, the Orchestra of Niss in the former Yugoslavia, and the National Symphony of Thessalonica. She has presented recitals in numerous cities across the world including New York, Chicago, Memphis, Washington, Florida, Paris, Ottawa, Athens, and Thessaloniki.
Ms. Zhulla has appeared in music festivals such as Music@Menlo, the Perlman Music Program Chamber Music Workshop, and Kneisel Hall. She was a faculty member with the LK String Quartet at the summer educational program Chamber Music at the Rockies. She attended Pinchas Zukerman’s Young Artists Program in Canada and has studied for seven summers at the Perlman Music Program. A dedicated chamber musician, Ms. Zhulla was a member of the LK String Quartet, which was praised by the New York Times as “fiery and propulsive, with striking unanimity,” when the quartet made its New York debut at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in March of 2008. She has performed numerous times at the Metropolitan Museum as well as in the East Hamptons with legendary violinist Itzhak Perlman. Other collaborations include Pinchas Zukerman, Orli Shaham, Don Weilerstein, Paul Katz, and the Cavani String Quartet.
Ms. Zhulla holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from the Juilliard School, where she studied under the tutelage of Itzhak Perlman and Catherine Cho. Perlman selected her for this performance with the Boca Raton Symphonia.
