Boca Symphonia’s Young People’s Concerts expand many horizons
December 4, 2006
By John Johnston

The Boca Symphonia’s recent Young People’s Concerts held at Boca Raton High School was a classical concert featuring selections from some of America’s finest composers. Entitled “American Landmarks and Landscapes,” the concert was conducted by Aaron Kula, and featured works from Scott Joplin, George Gershwin, Aaron Copeland, Leonard Bernstein and many other greats.

More than 1,800 public and private school students from schools throughout Palm Beach County experienced the concert

The concert was made possible by the generous contributions of Edith and Martin B. Stein and the Wachovia Foundation.

To provide the students with a greater understanding of the concert experience, in the weeks prior, chamber groups from the Boca Symphonia visited each school and conducted a class offering insights into instruments and the composers featured.

The visits were augment by a teacher’s curriculum booklet created by Olga M. Vazquez, the Symphonia’s Educational Curriculum Coordinator and a doctoral student at FAU. This booklet provided educators with comprehensive instructional information and lesson planning guidelines that corresponded with the student’s current English, music and history studies.

“I was so proud and had a complete feeling of exultation when I looked at all the young bright faces and saw some waving imaginary batons and swaying to the music,” said Martin Stein. “I recognized that this was totally absent from the days when I went to school and I was so happy that the youth of today are benefiting from this series of stimulating and exciting programs.”
